The circular area of the image is 8 inches in diameter. It ships unframed (but protected) in a flat reinforced envelope. Inspired by the front face of the silver 1921 Peace Dollar, this watercolor depicts Lady Liberty wearing a golden crown of light. In my interpretation, her hair is bright red, her skin is fair, and her eyes are blue - a play on the patriotic theme of "red, white and blue." I was inspired to paint this because I thought the original coin seemed to show a woman in the grip of some strong emotion, which raises the question: what strong emotion would Lady Liberty feel if she saw America today?

It shows the strength of a family who follows the guidance of the Lord, beginning with the patriarch Joseph who extends his protection to his wife and newborn son. Sometimes the world seems dark and frightening, but we must keep our hope alive and be courageous.

This is part of a series called "King in Winter and Other Stories" which I began in the winter of 2023-24. The idea for this study is that Liberty is wearing a veil to signify humility, and a broken chain to symbolize freedom.

I've also shown a grapevine bursting back into life after the cold of winter, and the delicate sprouts of new growth in the plowed fields. I made this picture because I'm tired of empty modern art. Many people offer solutions, but I believe that there is only one true solution: we must turn away from our sins and return to Christ. This painting was inspired by the well-known Walking Liberty coin, which was first released as a silver half-dollar. However, I've changed many elements in the coin, so that Liberty is turning away from sin and reaching toward the morning star which symbolizes Christ. Her hair is loose, symbolizing repentance; and her feet are bare, symbolizing humility. Instead of the laurel and oak in the original coin (which symbolized victory in peace and war) she carries iris and rue. Rue refers to repentance, while iris represents wisdom, faith and true valor. There are many other symbols included in this image, which makes it enjoyable to contemplate at home.
